MEMORY_MANAGEMENT (0x1A): what it means and how to fix it
By Gaurav Rawat · Updated Oct 2, 2026 · Checked against Microsoft documentation · How this page is made
Quick answer
The MEMORY_MANAGEMENT blue screen means Windows found its memory records in an impossible state. Faulty or unstable RAM is the most common cause, followed by drivers and storage problems. Test your memory and turn off XMP/EXPO first.
What it means
Windows keeps detailed bookkeeping of which memory is in use, by what, and where it lives. Bug check 0x1A means that bookkeeping no longer adds up: a page is marked as something it can't be, or a structure has been overwritten.
Something corrupted it. On home PCs that something is usually the RAM itself, either a failing stick or memory running at settings it can't hold. Drivers that write where they shouldn't, and problems reading the page file from a failing drive, cause the rest.
A memory test is the best first step
Because RAM is the leading cause, start with a memory test. If it fails, nothing else will fix the crashes. If it passes, move on to drivers and storage.
Common causes
- A failing RAM stick.
- Memory running at an unstable XMP/EXPO profile or overclock.
- A driver corrupting memory.
- A failing SSD or hard drive holding the page file.
- Corrupted system files.
How to fix it
Safest and most likely fixes first. Readers' answers to "Did this fix it?" reorder this list over time.
Test your RAM
If the crashes are random, or this stop code alternates with other memory-related ones.
- Save your work, press Win + R, type mdsched.exe and press Enter.
- Choose Restart now and check for problems, and let the test run to the end.
- When Windows starts, check the result notification, or Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System, filtered for MemoryDiagnostics-Results.
- Any errors mean a memory problem. Reseat the sticks, test them one at a time, and replace any that fail.
Did this fix it?Undo overclocks and memory profiles
If you've enabled XMP/EXPO, overclocked or undervolted anything, or the crashes happen under load.
- Restart into your BIOS/UEFI setup (usually Delete or F2 as the PC starts).
- Load optimised defaults, or turn off XMP/EXPO and any CPU or GPU overclock or undervolt.
- Close or uninstall GPU tuning tools that apply settings at startup.
- Use the PC for a few days on stock settings to see if the crashes stop.
Did this fix it?Test RAM sticks one at a time
On a desktop with more than one stick, if the memory test found errors or crashes continue.
- Shut down, unplug the PC and remove all but one RAM stick.
- Use the PC (or run the memory test) with that stick, then swap to the next.
- Replace the stick that causes errors, and reseat the rest firmly.
Did this fix it?Repair Windows system files
If the crashes started after an update, a power cut or a forced shutdown.
- Right-click Start and open Terminal (Admin).
- Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and wait for it to finish.
- Then run sfc /scannow.
- Restart once both have completed.

Frequently asked questions
Does MEMORY_MANAGEMENT mean my RAM is bad?
Very often, but not always. Run Windows Memory Diagnostic and turn off XMP or EXPO to find out.
Can an SSD cause the MEMORY_MANAGEMENT blue screen?
Yes. If the page file is read from a failing drive, Windows can find corrupted memory data.
Why does MEMORY_MANAGEMENT happen while gaming?
Games use a lot of memory quickly, so unstable RAM or memory settings are more likely to fail under that load.
